What Is The Best Birth Control Along With Breastfeeding?

I am breastfeeding my now 2 month old baby. I do not like the idea of IUD’s. I used to take the pill and it made me gain weight. I am leaning to the depo shot. I would like to know what other people have tried, its effects and if recommended. I just want something short term. Thanks in advance for your answers.

The one that suits my wants/needs the best is the mini-pill.
Condoms- no thanks. I married my man, we’ve never been with anyone else, and i refuse to suffer them!!!
Shots/implants- have the risk of lasting longer than i’d want them to, which would be bad, especially been as i had trouble TTC.
pill with both hormones- has a higher effect on breast milk supply than the mini pill.
My only worry with the mini pill is that it can still affect BF a little, and that i have to take it the same time each day. And i’m already taking 3 things just for my pregnancy. i have 5 tablets a day as it is. But, i don’t think my body would cope with getting pregnant again so soon. And i want time to enjoy my bubba, so the mini pill will work the best for me i think.
I used the Depo Provera shot for 4 years after my son was born, because it was safe with breastfeeding. I had no problems with weight gain or anything. I always got the shot in my hip, and that area stayed a little sore for several days, but that’s really the only problem I had with it. I LOVED it because you don’t get that “monthly visitor”, and once every 3 months is very easy to remember, especially if you set up the next appt when you get a shot, they usually call you to remind you.
I can’t really say that I saw any downside to it…
My daughter is 12 months old, we are not using any birth control because we would like another soon so they are close in age. After 12 months of breastfeeding with no birth control, my fertility still hasn’t returned. No sign of it returning anytime soon. I know this isn’t true for everyone, just wanted to let you know…
dont go on the depo. i gained 40 pounds on that damn shot and i still cant lose that weight, i havent been on the shot in i dunno 2.5 years, it took me almost a 1.5 years before i was able to get pregnant with my 2nd child. he is now 3 months and i choose to go with mirena (iud), so far i absolutly love it! i love the fact of family planning with it such as you can take it out when ever by the doctor and be able to get pregnant as if you werent ever on anything. i also love the fact that i dont have to do anything such as getiing a poke from the shot and having a sore arm or butt for 3 days or having to remember to take the pill or take the nuvaring out after 3 weeks. it doesnt hurt much to get it inserted either and then thats it.
I tried the depo shot when i was not pregnant and hated it. I gained weight, lost my sex drive completely, and had weird, irregular spotting the whole time. Plus the soreness at the injection site almost never went away.
I know you want short term, but have you considered Implanon? It is a small matchstick size implant that goes in your arm and releases progestin only form of birth control. It lasts for 3 years and has significantly less hormones than regular BC which is best for breastfeeding mothers.
I am going for mine in a couple weeks! Yay! It can be removed at any time.
You can take the minipill but that is about your only other option. It must be taken all 28 days (or constantly) and at the exact time every day. It is a little more strict than regular BC. I can’t even remember to take a regular pill so the Implanon is my choice. Ewwwie on the Mirena!
I was on Depo after my first child for 6 years and gained close to 70 pounds. My sister gained about 40. You have no monthly visits, but think about it…Is that right for a woman to miss her monthly body cleansing? It also took away my willingness to have sex, and the doctors inject you in the butt, My husband and I used the “rhythm” method when I finally became fed up with the weight. Then came child 2. After she was born, my doctor wanted me to try the ring. I couldn’t imagine having to take it out once a month and it popping out in the toilet by accident. Then we lingered on convincing my husband to have a vasectomy. He didn’t. I just had child number 3 two weeks ago, I was going to get an IUD..that is until my sister lost hers this summer. Don’t ask me how, but that was scary enough for me to say no way. I was reluctant about having a foreign object in my body anyhow. My doctor wants me to get a tubaligation; but don’t think I wanna. If you’re sure you want it short term, then the ring or mini pill has to be right for you.even condoms or spermicide..it is short term afterall.
I take a progestin-only birth control pill, safe for use while breastfeeding. It does not normally cause weight gain, and did not cause me to gain any weight. My OB/GYN discussed my options for birth control while breastfeeding and told me about the pill and the shot. The shot was the one she specified may cause weight gain, so I didn’t go with that one. I have been happy with the pill so far, except for the fact that it can and does cause acne for me. Also, when I first began taking it (about 6 weeks post partum), I had breakthrough bleeding for about a week. It was similar to a heavy period, and I have had no bleeding since.
Here is the one I take:http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-75915-Jo…
Take care!
I’ve heard good things about the mini pill, after a baby. I really wouldn’t get depo, especially if pills make you gain weight, the shot is much more likely to.
If you can remember to take the pill everyday, do that. If not, suck up the fact that you are going to put on a few pounds and get the shot.
The mini pill is my suggestion.
i also have a two month old. my midwife also suggested an IUD and I am considering it. i really trust her and perhaps it’s better than a bunch of hormones!! depo lasts for three months and of course there are side effects but they’re probably tolerable. i would research side effects online. FYI – LAM works as long as you are breastfeeding exclusively…so that’s for six months! still have time to figure it out.
The shot can make you gain more than the pill!!! My sis had it and put on 60 lbs in 1 yr.
I used barrier methods – condoms or diaphram. It’s slighly inconvenient, but not a big deal and we never got pregnant until we wanted to! My sis in law used diaphram while nursing too and she was fine. No hormones is really nice!
NUVA RING! You only have to think about when it’s time to change it out, and it works just as good as the pill. The shot sucks ***, it works but it made me bleed all randomly, and it just all around I would not recommend it. I had a friend who gained 20 lbs on it. Go with the Nuva Ring.
I would go for the copper IUD. It’s hormone free and you don’t have to worry about it for years. My sis had one and I’m getting on next year. I would not recommend the shot. Inever gained weight from it but after i quit getting it, it took two years to get a period back.
Err I wouldn’t recommend the depo shot if you don’t want to gain weight. I gained 20 pounds within 3 shots, and my sister gained like..40. I know there are risks of blood clots too.
That’s the only birth control I’ve ever been on, so I’m not sure what to recommend.
I use the mini pill. Its hard to remember to take it at the same time everyday but It doesnt pass through the breastmilk and I know when I am ready I can stop taking it and ill be fertile!
midwife had told me to use condoms for first month then back on pill unless breastfeeding.. so i imagin because you are breastfeeding condoms have fun lol xxxx
Condoms. I don’t use anything with hormones in them. I have enough.
the most effective form of birth control is abstinence. and it’s easier than you think. reflect back on the last 9 months of living hell that culminated in you virtually squeezing a pot roast out of a nostril. is sex really worth it?
