What Are Some Forms Of Contraception For A Breastfeeding Woman?

My wife is pregnant and coming up on her due date. We do not wish to become again until at least 1 year has passed.
What are some forms of contraception we can use while she is breastfeeding? We have a stash of condoms, but that’s our last preference. :)
Thanks!

She can talk to her doctor about the “mini pill” it is for breast feeding moms so it doesn’t affect the baby, and it doens’t make you all hormonal like normal birth control. Just prevents getting pregnant (well you know, 99.9% of the time).
Other than that you can use condoms, diaphrams, and I think that’s it, her doctor will go over a lot of it with you guys at her 6 week post baby appt though :)
    Good luck & Congrats!

She can get on the “mini pill” which is a birth control pill that can be taken while nursing, however it is not as effective as the normal pills (only 92% effective if I remember correctly). I chose this method but my friend warned me that she knew several people who got pregnant on these pills, so my husband and I used the withdrawl method in addition to the pills (or you could use condoms with these pills just to be safe).
She could also get an IUD but she can’t have it put in until 3 months after the baby is born and they are usually so expensive that they’re really only worth it if you want to be child free for 5 years (even with insurance it would have cost me $900, but yours may differ).
Another option is the depo shot, which she would need to get every 3 months. Effective but some people don’t like the side effects from it.
When it’s time you and your wife can talk to the doctor about your options to get more specific info about each method.
    Good luck and congratulations!!!

If you only want to wait one year, there are bc pills that she can take. If you’re looking to wait a few years, I would highly recommend the mirena. It is so easy, and can be removed before 5 years if you want.

It might not be as good but it sure is safest and less artificial than the pill to use a condom at least you’re not introducing any unnatural medicine in such a delicate phase. we do so.

    Spermicide with condoms.
