I am getting married tomorrow and am not able to sleep very well. I don’t have time to consult doctor on what I can and cannot take. Has anyone ever been on over the counter cold medicines while breastfeeding?

Just try chicken soup for now. It really helps and will not hurt!
Even doctors don’t know the full effect of meds, sweetie.
The best scientific evidence we have for chicken soup’s cold-fighting capacity comes from a study at the University of Nebraska where researchers exposed neutrophils, the white cells that fight infections but also cause inflammation, to diluted chicken broth. The liquid slowed the movement of the cells, suggesting that in the body chicken soup can do the same thing. The result, if you have a cold, would be relief of some symptoms.
Store-bought chicken soup:
Listed in order of presumed effectiveness:
Knorr’s Chicken Flavor Chicken Noodle
Campbell’s Home Cookin’ Chicken Vegetable
Campbell’s Healthy Request Chicken Noodle
Lipton’s Cup-o-soup, Chicken Noodle
Progresso Chicken Noodle.
Other brands, including some of Campbell’s, were less effective.
Here’s the recipe. More work of course, but you can cut the excessive use of salt found in store-bought types:
1 5-to 6-lb stewing hen or baking chicken,
1 package of chicken wings,
3 large onions,
l large sweet potato,
3 parsnips,
2 turnips,
11 to 12 large carrots,
5 to 6 celery stems,
1 bunch of parsley,
salt and pepper to taste.
Cover the chicken with cold water, and bring it to boiling. Add chicken wings, onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnips and carrots. Boil about 1 1/2 hours, removing fat regularly. Add the parsley and celery. Cook all about 45 minutes longer. Remove the chicken, which is no longer used for the soup. Put the vegetables in a food processor until chopped fine or pass them through a strainer. Add salt and pepper.
Enjoy!
tylenol
There are not a lot of medications that pass through breastmilk in such a quanity that it will affect the baby. You will be fine taking a cold medication while breastfeeding
Tylenol is the best thing to take while breastfeeding. may make baby a little sleepy but it also may do some good for the both of you. if you do decide to take something different then Tylenol then i would call the pharmacy and ask them what would be safe to take.
The main one you want to avoid is Sudafed and any other Pseudoephedrine (as they dry up the fluids in your body…and that will usually affect your milk supply.)
I’m linking a page since I’m not sure what symptoms you’re experiencing, and kelly mom has the details on what you can and can’t take. They start with herbal remedies and move on to over the counter meds.

As a side note be cautious combining cold medications and alcohol -not just for you but because both can be sedating to the baby and both can reduce your supply.

Robitussin DM all the meds you took during pregnancy are safe too. Also know that most meds like alcohol don’t affect your milk as much as most think and should be safe. Congrats on 7 months BF
