Its a bit of a vulgar question but…My wife is a little self conscious after having stopped breastfeeding last month, and I just want to know so I can give her support and reassurance.

Pregnancy -not breastfeeding – is what causes a woman’s areolas to change shape and color. It is an evolutionary adaptation – it helps our babies see our breasts more easily after they are born. This change happens regardless of whether or not a woman actually breastfeeds her baby.
While her breasts and areolas will likely not return to the exact size they were before pregnancy, they will probably lighten and shrink a bit. How long did she breastfeed? If less than one year, it may take that long to notice a difference. It takes one year for a woman’s body to “go back to normal” – hormone wise. During that time, she is still under the effects of some of the hormonal changes that she experienced during and after pregnancy.
Just let her know you love her no matter what her body looks like! How wonderful that you are searching for this information for her!
    Take care!

Your question is not vulgar at all, it is wonderful that you are seeking information to reassure and support her. Her aureoles may never return to their pre-pregnancy size, so it is hard to say how long it will take from them to decrease in size or by how much. I know this isn’t a whole lot of info, but each person is different and there isn’t really even a ballpark time frame I can give you. Keep up the great work! Show her you still love her nipples no matter what size they are!

They will never look like they did before she had the baby. I know it’s not the answer you’re looking for, but they will always be larger and darker.

Her breast will never look the same.
Try breast reconstruction or get a lift if she is still conserned.
