How Can I Eat Enough Healthy Food While Breastfeeding?

I’m breastfeeding my third child and life is hectic. He’s a big baby and needs a lot of milk, and I’m finding that I’m eating a lot of rubbish (especially sugar) to keep me going because it’s quick and easy. How can I eat more healthily and stop craving sugar without it taking too much effort.

I’m feeling the same thing. But you do the best you can. Some things we do 1. I have my husband cook supper 2. ready cut fruit and vegs (cut up fruit and dip-yummm) 3. high protein, quick foods such as canned beans and eggs, even they have microwavable fish with sauce 3. lots of milk, chocolate soy milk (my fave treat), vegetable juice 4. When you or partner make a meal, triple it- it takes no more time and you can grab a plate of leftovers 5. if you need the sugar- I find a cup of tea with 2 sugar satisfies my sweet craving.

Its a tricky one this isn’t it?
My little man (well not so little actually) is the same and I too crave loads of sugar and snack on biscuits and cake etc as it is quick.
Recently I have bought soups and things to have a super quick lunch – can even put it in a mug and sip while I feed. Also throw a baked potato in the oven early and that with some beans, tuna etc is a quick and healthy lunch.
I try to always have a proper dinner either cooked by my partner or I make it while he amuses the little man and distracts him from thoughts of feeding!

I think the best thing to do is only have healthy choices in your home. If that is all you can choose from that is all you will eat.
When you are nursing, make that your time to eat a nutritious snack. You have to sit anyhow, so this is your time to relax and eat healthy. Munch on a bowl of fruit, make a peanut butter sandwich, or drink a fruit smoothie.
Just remember everything you consume, your little one consumes it too. You would never feed a newborn junk food, so be sure you aren’t eating it either.
    Good luck to ya!

i think the best thing is not to buy any when you go grocery shopping, if there is none at home, then you’ll find a healthier replacement… why not replace them with baby carrots and cherry tomatoes? you can also make a fruit salad and keep it in the refrigerator… or frozen fruits, those are great too…. try having some healthy snacks at home, you’ll see you’ll get used to eating healthy….

When I was breastfeeding, I was mainly snaking on popcorn (lightly salty or plain), grapes, toast (wholemeal is better). You could do yourself some mini sandwich of houmous (rich in protein) or ham or egg. I think protein will help you crave sugar less.
    Oh and congratulations!!!

I crave sugar since breast feeding.
Try eating dried fruit for when you are on the go as it has natural sugars. Drink fruit juice.
Take pregnacare vitamins, they have the omega 3 capsules with them too.
I take them but do tend to forget

i worried about getting my baby what she needed – so i have been drinking ensure and v-8 juice….that way – she gets calories and vegetables. you could get the v-8 fruit fusion and get a sweet fix and get fruits and veggies to the little one :)
