Do They Doctors Give You A Morphine Pump After A C-section If You Are Breastfeeding?

I had my son in 2006 by c-section. I had a morphine pump following surgery, but I didn’t breastfeed him. I am expecting another baby in February and having a repeat c-section, but I am planning on breastfeeding this time. Do they give you a morphine pump if you are breastfeeding?

Having a C-section is major abdominal surgery. Yes, you can have morphine after your surgery. The pump a PCA (patient controlled analgesic) is hooked up to your IV, the anesthesiologist gives he nurses parameters to program into the PCA and you hit the button when you need it. You are only allowed what is put in the program so you can not overdose or take as much as you want. Very minimal amounts go through in to the breast milk, and you will not have this pump for ever, you will have it maybe 24 hours. Also take motrin during your entire stay and after you go home, this is an anti-inflammatory and will also help with all the cramping that occurs after having a baby. After the PCA is removed you will be placed on oral pain meds like Tylenol with codeine, and that is also safe. But if you don’t need it don’t take it, I have taken care of patients who hav done well with only motrin after PCA’s were removed. Remember to not get behind on the pain med, it is very difficult to catch up
Ok, IN GENERAL morphine is compatible with breastfeeding, however it’s not common to give breastfeeding mothers anything near as strong as this unless the circumstances are truly exceptional.
In fact it’s not common to give mothers a morphine drip/pump after a c-section even if they’r enot.
But it might depend where you are in the world. I am in Australia. They tend to do things differently in the USA.
Most mothers cope well with basic pain relief products you can buy pretty much over the counter, and perhaps an anti-inflammatory as well.
Do you have any other medical conditions that would warrant such extreme pain relief (eg: arthritis, lupus etc)
My wife was given Morphine Pump for pain management for about 1-2 days. Prior to attaching the pump she was breast pumped for colostrum and the nurses fed my son the expressed colostrum and infant formula via NGT or Nasogastric Tube, while he was on incubator for 4 days.
After the Morphine Pump was removed she was given other types of medicine via her IV dextrose for pain management and she was wheeled to the nursery ward for breast feeding. She and my son was out of the hospital in 1 week from birth.
My son will be 2 this Christmas.
They can. They gave me ibuprofen and T3.. That was also a couple (9) years ago. There has been more info since then. So, I have a list of meds that are approved, approved with caution, and NOT recommended.
In fact, my last baby was born in Feb of 07 and I didn’t get morphine then either. Interesting to note that some here do….They gave me a block and that held me for a long time. I never even had an epi.
I think this is an interesting questions merely because I had a c-sec on 05 and I as well, got a morphine pump after surgery although I didn’t breast feed that time either. I am wondering about this myself since my c-sec is in feb. as well. Good Question, wish I could help (just didn’t want you to feel bad because the other answers were so “shocked” you got a morphine drip)
I breastfed, the hospital knew of my intentions to breastfeed. and they gave me a morphine drip. they never even asked me what I wanted lol..I was 17 and very tired so I didn’t question it. this time around I’m gonna be all over everything they do lol
i had my son in 2006 and a daughter in march both by c section and i didnt get a morphine drip. i got darvocet for my pain and i could breastfeed while taking it
Morphine pump? Are you serious? I had a c-section and wasn’t breastfeeding and didn’t get morphine, much less a pump. I got Ibuprofen.
i dont think you can have morphine if you breastfeed. call the doc and ask.
I didn’t get morphine. Just hydrocodone and ibuprofen.
No they don’t give you morphine. I was kept on the epidural for 48 hrs after the c-section. Then was given percacet.
