I have decided to breastfeed when our baby is born, but wanted to know if it was ok to also have formula milk on hand for emergencies.
I run my own shop and there may be times when i cannot breastfeed or express my milk into a bottle…
I’d appreciate any advice, thanks

hello. of course you can.
you can give 50% breast milk and 50% bottle if you want or any other combination. its up to you what you do.
the only thing is that you need to get your baby used to drinking from a bottle.
if he is used to having a breast it is hard for some babies to have a bottle as they are so different for them.
i used the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles. the teats are supposed to be similar to what a breast feels like for the baby.
they are the only bottles my breast fed baby would have.
yes you can but i wouldnt advise it early on, I both formula fed and breast fed but the formula took over because it was introduced too early and so baby had got used to bottle was easier way before he got breast feeding established, my milk supply dwindled because he wasnt so fussy with the breast he knew a bottle was coming (a bottle is a lot easier for baby and if they have a bottle why work to establish breast feeding)
its your choice ultimately but i would advise purely breast feeding until it is established before mixing both formula and breast milk.
Yes but make sure the baby is ok with a bottle before you leave them alone with dad or someone else.
My daughter used to cry and cry and my health visitor advised topping her up on formula and it worked a treat. You don’t get the guilt of having stopped breast feeding but it takes away the worry that they’re not getting enough milk. Also useful if someone else has to feed baby if you have to sleep or go out somewhere. I was recommended Avent bottles and SMA Gold formula.
BTW – Just ignore the die hard breastfeeding is the only way brigade – everyone’s life is different.
It’s Absolutely fine!!!!!!! If your baby likes the bottle and is not confused with the nipples.
I breast feed and give my son formula since he was 2 months old……….i stopped giving him bottle for 2 weeks in between and he doesn’t take it now…..trying to get him drink from the bottle is sooooooo hard now….i give him baby cereal from 3 months of age ( doc’s advice ) and use formula for making it …and he is fine!!!!!
But make sure you introduce the formula slowly with around 5 ml per day mixed in your pumped milk …plan accordingly and to the quantity your baby needs on formula in 10-14 days time…..its helps the baby to adjust…all the best….
you can ABSOLUTELY do both! of course breast milk is best for your baby (especially a newborn) and kudos for choosing to breastfeed. try to pump as much breastmilk as you can for your baby, your boobs will thank you, i promise. ask your doc wat formula to use so the transition doesnt constipate the baby, but i did it when i went back to work when my daughter was 1 month old, and she did just fine! good luck!
You’re gona get alot of criticism in a minute. People saying you shouldn’t mixed bottle and breast feeding but like you said if it’s for an emergency then there is no harm in giving your baby the formula once in a while, after all you are mainly breast feeding and not many people can manage that. Good luck Xx
Yes you can, it doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks as long as you are happy with the idea. Just be careful some babies do build a preference over the breast milk to formula or bottle to the breast as bottles require less effort. I would recommend using a slow flow teat.
of course you can do both. i did, but most midwives will tell you otherwise like they did with me. my son was extremely hungry so i gave him hungry baby formula as well. Remember that you are mum and you know what is best for your baby.
yes totally both my first 2 were on both they had breast milk but i couldnt fill them as they were so hungry and they were topped up with formula or if i had to go somewhere they would have formula if they needed a feed before i was home again. they are both healthy and were happy content babies
Yes it is ok to do that, i formula fed, and also expressed milk after 2wks breast feeding. Only problem with giving the formula is it can reduce your milk supply.
xx
yes of course!
i had to give my son forumla when i was int the hospital for 5 days cause i had to have my gaulbladder removed and could even give him my pumped milk cause of the drugs in it
yes you can, but the baby will like the formula milk more as it has many flavours, but never mind it is healthy to have both.
Its fine, any pediatrician will tell you the same.
People don’t recommend it as it’s a bit too much for their tummies to cope with.
Pumping isn’t hard, and doesn’t take long..
yes you can my mum breast fed and used formula with me and my sister and we turned out fine!
Yes! Its fine…
You can yes, however it is more beneficial for the baby for their first 8 months if they receive breast milk rather than formula. it is more beneficial for them because it decreases their chances of becoming allergic to certain foods later on in life. the breast milk provides important nutrients that formula cannot provide. Remember to introduce all foods from a young age, like egg and peanut butter etc. because babies build up a tolerance to these foods and will less likely become allergic to them if they are avoided.
Good luck
it might be hard to get the bottle and breast in the babys mouth at the same time.
Sounds like a bit of a mouthful for the poor mite!
Oh get a sense of humour transplant!
